Project Description:
In Wastu Bazar, a remote village in Turbat District, communities faced chronic shortages of safe drinking water. Existing water sources were either distant, contaminated, or both, contributing to high rates of waterborne disease and placing a heavy burden on women and children responsible for water collection.
UKMAP funded the installation of a solar-powered reverse osmosis water treatment system to address this critical need. The RO plant uses membrane technology to remove salts, impurities, and contaminants from groundwater, producing safe, potable water suitable for both human and livestock consumption. Powered entirely by solar energy, the facility is designed to operate reliably in an area where grid electricity is either unavailable or highly unreliable.
Local community members have been trained in basic operation and maintenance, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the system and promoting local ownership.
Beneficiaries: Approximately 4,000 people and livestock
Impact:
The project has significantly reduced the prevalence of waterborne illnesses, particularly among children and older people, and has improved overall community health and well-being. Families no longer need to travel long distances for water of uncertain quality, freeing time for education, income generation, and caregiving. The use of solar energy has also reduced operating costs and environmental impact, ensuring that the system can continue to serve the community for many years.
